36.58 million tonnes of cargo handled by port

V.O. Chidambaranar Port here 365.83 lakh tonnes of cargo against the previous years 384.63 lakh tonnes, registering a decrease of 4.89%. While imports accounted for 261.71 lakh tonnes (-6.52%), exports accounted for 104.12 lakh tonnes (-0.51%).

The port registered a record throughput of 6,97,631 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of containers in 2017-18 clocking a growth of 8.65% over the previous years 6,42,103 TEUs. I. Jeyakumar, Chairman, VOC Port Trust, in a statement said they had plans to move forward to meet challenges and accommodate large ships.

When compared to 2016-17, cargoes that had shown considerable increase were: containerised cargo 8.65% (55,528 TEUs), limestone 22.57% (2.50 lakh tonnes), palm oil 65.23% (1.40 lakh tonnes), timber logs 45.90% (1.32 lakh tonnes) and clinkers 134.68% (1.05 lakh tonnes).There was a phenomenal growth of 33.11% in coastal cargo traffic in 2017-18: 99.72 lakh tonnes over 74.92 lakh tonnes in 2016-17.

Average ship berth day output had increased from 10,456 tonnes in the previous fiscal to 11,961 tonnes in 2017-18. There were 1,482 ship calls, down by 10.83% from the 1,662 ship calls during 2016-17. The fewer vessel calls illustrated that much of the cargo was arriving in larger ships.
